Sacai’s New Collaboration Taps Into Tulip Mania

LONDON — Sacai is launching a collaboration with London-based jewelry label Bunney and San Francisco-based industrial designer Eugene “Eug” Whang on Friday.

The collective took inspiration from Tulip Mania, a historical phenomenon which saw tulip prices surge in Holland in the 17th century.

Bunney and Whang codesigned the “Aperture Vase,” coming in a high-polish or with a hand-planished finishes, and a tulip brooch encrusted with 246 gemstones, including diamonds and rubies.

“The story of someone coming home from the flower market and arranging flowers in this vase was always with us, so it seemed natural to start to think of what that person might be wearing. We approached our friends at Sacai about these ideas and their proposal of a contemporary florist’s uniform seemed lovely,” declared Whang and Bunney’s founder Andrew Bunney.

“With both aesthetic and practical elements, the Aperture vase immediately resonated with what I strive for in my own Sacai designs, creating new silhouettes from the classic that everyone is familiar with,” said Sacai founder Chitose Abe.

“To complete the project, we applied their concept to Sacai apparel and accessories, where we combined our identities into the florist uniform,” she added.

The Sacai-designed apparel therefore resembles a modern florist’s uniform, ranging from a cap and logo T-shirts to a black lab coat with an embroidered tulip above the breast pocket and a flower bouquet carrier bag.

The brooch will be exhibited and available for order in all three locations, while the vase will be at Sacai’s Aoyama store and at London’s Dover Street Market only.
