Top American designers have been unveiling their menswear designs for Fall ’96 in New York this week.
On Wednesday, Nautica designer and President David Chu presented his designs.
This is the essence of the Nautica Collection – redefining the once-firm distinctions between sportswear and tailored clothing.
Typical of that – this model is wearing a light microfibre fleece that is paired with a tailored trouser.
Slim-fitting turtlenecks were worn over ski pants or were matched with a suit.
One of the models spoke about the new designs.

“There are a of fun clothes in this collection, clothes that you wear to be casual, round the house or out in the street. Lot of nice snow gear too – so it’s nice, real athletic line.” SUPER CAPTION: Jason Olive, model
Fall ’96 also sees the return of rich woollens – Harris tweeds and windowpane plaids.
Top coats are trim, suit jackets are single-breasted and streamlined with a nip at the waist.
But Nautica’s designer and President is excited about his mix of sportswear with formal wear.

“You see some of these boxy Nautex jackets, outwear pieces mixing with some of the warm gray chocolate suits, its really a new twist and I think its really a modern way to dress some the classic way of looking at things.”

As David Chu accepted the applause of the audience for his new collection, it was clear that his fresh combinations and elegant simplicity were a big hit.
