The Makings of a ‘Sleepy Girl Mocktail’

“Sleepy girl mocktails” are the new hot girl walk.

While the viral concoction’s earliest iteration — an equal blend of Olipop prebiotic soda and tart cherry juice, which is believed to increase the body’s melatonin levels — first emerged last January, it gained a boost in the spring when influencer and then-Moon Juice partner Gracie Norton upped the ante with a scoop of the brand’s Magnesi-Om magnesium powder.

Over the holidays, though, the drink trend reached new heights, breaking through TikTok’s niche wellness community and into the mainstream, with the #SleepyGirlMocktail hashtag surpassing 26.7 million views on the platform. While iterations vary in some degrees — some add dried fruit garnish, others froth the mixture for an upgrade — the trend has become almost entirely synonymous with Moon Juice.

“You have to get that strike of TikTok lightning, which for us turned out to be the sleepy girl mocktail,” said Moon Juice founder Amanda Chantal Bacon, adding that the brand’s magnesium powder, which retails for $42 and also features calm-inducing nootropic L-theanine, has seen 1,000 percent sales growth on Amazon during the last year and 200 percent growth on the brand’s own website.

“Creating something that’s ceremonial, that’s celebratory and also tastes delicious and feels like you can look forward to each day — that seems to be the recipe,” said Chantal Bacon, who is “working on something else inspired by how everyone else is using our product.”

Chantal Bacon’s own hot girl mocktail hot tip? “I like it with a sparkling mineral water — a Pellegrino or a Mountain Valley is what I use.”
