L’Oréal Launches Melasyl to Prevent Skin Pigmentation Marks

PARIS — L’Oréal has launched a groundbreaking molecule, called Melasyl, that was created to prevent the development of skin pigmentation marks.

The French beauty giant spent almost 20 years of research and vetted 100,000 molecules to arrive at the proprietary cosmetic ingredient, which aims to help stop dark spots, such as age spots and brown macules, including persistent ones, from forming.

During the quest, L’Oréal conducted more than 121 clinical studies involving 120,000 participants that delved into skin issues impacting more than 500,000 women around the globe.

Melasyl balances excess melanin in order to provide a more even skin tone, according to L’Oréal. Normal melanin production can be upset for many reasons and if untreated may lead to dark spots of various kinds. Melasyl does not permanently alter skin pigment production’s natural biological pathways that are responsible for skin color, however.

Melasyl was first presented in Singapore, at the World Congress of Dermatology 2023. It is being featured, as well, at the American Academy of Dermatology’s meeting in San Diego held between March 8 and 12.

Melasyl has been already integrated into formulation for La Roche-Posay’s Mela B3 franchise and will soon be added to some L’Oréal Paris, Vichy and Garnier products, followed by those under the Kiehl’s and CeraVe brands.
