EXCLUSIVE: Trafilea Acquires The Spa Dr.

Trafilea Tech E-commerce Group has been shopping again — this time in the beauty space.

After snapping up The BodCon, a digital conference focusing on body positivity, at the end of last year, the consumer tech e-commerce group just announced it has acquired direct-to-consumer clean skin care brand The Spa Dr. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are very excited to welcome The Spa Dr. into the Trafilea Group and to rapidly scale up the brand, leveraging our large female audience in the U.S., Trafilea’s tech, and its proven growth marketing platform now empowered by AI,” said Santiago Zabala, chief executive officer of Trafilea.

The Spa Dr., which was founded by Dr. Trevor Cates in Park City, Utah, around eight years ago, offers skin care including Bamboo & Rose Facial Exfoliant, $54.99, and Hydrate and Renew Enriched Moisturizer, $59.99. It also has its own ingestibles range, which is being reformulated.

Zabala declined to disclose The Spa Dr.’s current revenues, but estimates that it will bring in more than $10 million next year. He plans to invest $25 million in the brand over the next two years, expanding the product offering and growing its footprint internationally.

Dr. Trevor Cates, founder of The Spa Dr., who will stay on at the brand following the completion of the acquisition, said, “Combining my natural product development and medical expertise with Trafilea’s remarkable track record in tech, digital marketing and the women’s online space, I’m confident that we’ll rapidly empower women everywhere to embrace their sense of well-being and natural beauty the way we have always dreamed of, for The Spa Dr.”

Trafilea, which also owns shapewear brand Shapermint and intimates line Truekind, is projected to achieve $230 million in sales this year, and is hoping that the deal will help it to become a key player in the clean skin care industry.

“The opportunity is huge in the U.S. and internationally, and we want to create a movement to awaken women to embrace nontoxic skin care products and routines that can change their lives,” said Zabala.

Trafilea has also incubated a separate skin care brand, Revel Beauty, focused on adaptogens, that launched this year.
